Why APPI: New requirements from MLB require ball parks to provide higher levels of protection for spectators from foul balls. To comply with them, Wrigley Field contracted Strata Contractors LLC to install protective netting along both base lines to where they meet the outfield bleachers.
Due to other uses of the stadium, such as concerts, the netting must be removable. To handle the task of getting it up and down expeditiously, Tim Swiatowiec, the project manager on this job for Strata, contacted us looking for hoists that would provide 4,000 lbs. of line pull with 100 feet of travel at the hook.
After reviewing the application requirements, two of our Columbia HG5600 AC electric hoists (one for each base line nets) were selected to hoist the rigging lines and nets. Once in position the load is transferred from the hoist and rigging line to a static line.
A NEMA 6 rating for the control box and pendants allows them to be left exposed to Chicago weather with the control pendants being detachable to prevent unauthorized use of the hoists.
Given the short notice to get this system installed Tim opted for APPI’s expedited service to get the hoists in 3 days. Sorry, but it’s only fair to call this one a home run.
