Why APPI: Resurfacing a culvert with cement is a challenging task that requires precise timing and control over distances of up to 500 feet. Mike McDougle, On-Site Senior Customer Service Representative for Motion Industries, turned to us for a solution when one of their clients was faced with this challenge. Among their requirements for the winch were variable frequency drive controls so they could maintain a consistent speed and, as the cement sprayer would be working at remote job sites, it had to be powered by a portable single-phase generator.
After discussing their application requirements, a Columbia WG1600 AC electric winch was selected to pull their skid mounted cement sprayer. This winch pulls the skid through the culvert while it applies a new covering over a full 360 degrees inside the culvert. The speed control is adjustable to provide a consistent line speed – which is necessary to maintain a uniform coating thickness as the line builds up one the drum. A wire rope tension plate was added to keep the line from lifting off the drum when not under load.
