Why APPI: Portland General Electric, in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, controls the flow through the Willamette Falls fish ladder to ensure endangered salmon, steelhead and lamprey eel species can migrate freely to their spawning grounds.
Prior to the installation of this flow control hoist, the flow level “stop logs” were lifted and placed manually with multiple chain hoists and could only be accessed through an elaborate tunnel system under the falls. PGE, based on their prior experience with us on other fish related projects, asked we design a hoist that would improve the efficiency of the operation and be capable of operating in the fish ladder environment. With the new hoist in place adjusting the gates and stop logs has become easier, faster, more accurate and safer.
