Why APPI: Long Valley Reservoir (Crowley Lake) is the largest reservoir in the Los Angeles Aqueduct System and ultimately the source of drinking water for 4.3 million customers.
To meet California Department of Safety Of Dams requirements, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power must place a three-section segmental plug weighing 5000 pounds 80 feet below the reservoir water line to block an emergency diversion tunnel. Up to 10,000 lbs. of line pull may be required to remove this plug and pull it free.
Critical factors in purchasing this unit were its high-efficiency planetary reduction, sealed construction without any greasing requirements, and automatic brake.
According to the workers who use this unit, their barge-mounted Columbia Pneumatic Hoist turns what would have been a time-consuming and nearly impossible task into a routine operation.
