Why APPI:  There may not be an adage for it, but common sense says very large pieces of artwork and artifacts need to be displayed in large museums – and that means there needs to be a way to get those big pieces moved inside securely and safely.  In the case of a museum in New York, the artwork can be so large that a metal-framed wall with windows measuring 34 feet long and 18 feet high needed to be lifted to create access to the interior and upper floors.

After reviewing the requirements for the application with Baker Metal Products, two of our Columbia HR3 AC hoists were selected to handle this task.  In addition, two of our VLS-10 vertical lead sheaves were specified to provide the optimum pulling angle as the wall is lifted as well as ensure proper fleet angle for the wire ropes as they spool onto the drums.  One of these sheaves is equipped with an upper limit switch to prevent over-travel during hoisting.

To keep all components out of sight when not in use, the hoists and sheaves are mounted to the underside of the structural slab above while the NEMA 4X fiberglass control enclosure used to run both hoists is mounted above the level of the drop ceiling in the room.   A NEMA 4X hand-held pendant with an A or B or BOTH selector switch and UP/DOWN momentary contacts controls the two hoists. The controls also include an emergency stop button with 50 feet of wire between the control enclosure and the hand-held control to allow operation from the floor or in a scissor-lift.

In operation, a lifting truss is secured to the bottom of the wall and as it is pulled the entire section pivots into the building and up to the ceiling.  Once in the raised position, it is secured with safety straps to ensure against any form of mechanical failure.
